Background of the study
Afforestation initiatives, aimed at increasing forest cover and restoring degraded lands, are increasingly recognized as vital for environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation. In Akinyele Local Government Area, local authorities have implemented various afforestation programs to combat deforestation, enhance biodiversity, and improve air quality (Olalekan, 2023). These initiatives have involved community participation, reforestation of degraded lands, and the introduction of sustainable land management practices. Recent research highlights that afforestation not only sequesters carbon dioxide but also improves soil fertility, reduces erosion, and provides economic benefits through agroforestry (Babatunde, 2024). Despite these benefits, challenges such as funding constraints, community engagement, and long-term maintenance hinder the success of these projects (Adebayo, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of afforestation initiatives by local authorities in Akinyele, identifying key factors that contribute to or hinder success, and exploring ways to enhance community involvement and project sustainability. The research will provide a comprehensive assessment that can guide future environmental policies and afforestation efforts, ensuring that reforestation projects deliver both ecological and socio-economic benefits (Olayinka, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Afforestation initiatives in Akinyele have shown mixed results due to inadequate funding, limited community participation, and poor maintenance practices. The current efforts are insufficient to meet the reforestation targets necessary for environmental sustainability. This shortfall threatens biodiversity, soil conservation, and local economic opportunities, highlighting the need for a thorough evaluation and improvement of afforestation practices (Akinola, 2024).
